Leeuwarden, 19 June 2024 – In a significant move aimed at bolstering economic growth and enhancing the region’s appeal to international talent, the municipal council of Leeuwarden has approved funding for the establishment of an international primary school. This decision marks a pivotal step in the region’s ongoing efforts to foster a vibrant and inclusive community.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Leeuwarden and PCBO Leeuwarden, exploring the feasibility of setting up an international primary school at the IKC Middelsee location. Recent studies have indicated that this site is well-suited for offering international education, which is currently lacking in Fryslân. The nearest international primary school is located in Groningen, the only one in Northern Netherlands.
The establishment of an international primary school is seen as crucial for Fryslân. International education plays a vital role in attracting and retaining global talent, which is essential for the economic development of the region. By providing such education, Fryslân can create a more attractive business environment and strengthen its international reputation as a hospitable and globally oriented region.
Leeuwarden is already home to several major employers with a significant international workforce, including the Medical Centre Leeuwarden, Wetsus (the European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology), and NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. These institutions highlight the need for supporting international families and enhancing the local educational infrastructure.
A project leader, in collaboration with PCBO and a coalition of supportive employers, will now develop a comprehensive business case for the school. While the initial years are not expected to show a profit due to the time required to attract a sufficient number of students, this shortfall will be covered by partners across Fryslân. The municipality has earmarked €100,000 for this purpose.
The council’s decision on 19 June to allocate funds underscores the commitment of Leeuwarden to invest in its future and foster an environment that supports both local and international communities. This development is a promising stride towards making Fryslân a more attractive destination for global talent, contributing to the overall economic vitality and cultural richness of the region.
