Leeuwarden, 22 May 2024 – Today marks the official start of the project group dedicated to establishing an international primary school in Leeuwarden. This collaborative initiative brings together key stakeholders including PCBO Leeuwarden, NHL Stenden, and the Municipality of Leeuwarden, with support from project leader Michiel Kasteleijn.
The new school aims to address a critical gap in the region’s educational infrastructure. Currently, the nearest international primary school is located in Groningen, the only one in Northern Netherlands. By setting up an international primary school in Leeuwarden, the project aims to enhance the region’s appeal to international talent, thereby boosting economic growth and fostering a more inclusive community.
Michiel Kasteleijn, the appointed project leader, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative. “The presence of international education is vital for attracting and retaining global talent, which in turn stimulates our region’s economic development,” Kasteleijn said. “This school will not only provide a stronger business environment but also enhance Fryslân reputation as a welcoming and internationally oriented region.”
Leeuwarden already hosts several major employers with substantial international workforces, such as Hutamaki, RUG Campus Fryslân, Wetsus (European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology), and NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. The establishment of an international primary school will support these institutions and their employees, making the region more attractive for international professionals and their families.
The project team is currently focused on developing a comprehensive business case for the school. While the initial years are expected to show financial deficits as the school builds up its student base, these shortfalls will be covered by partners across Fryslân.
The involvement of local employers is crucial for the success of this initiative. The project team is actively seeking additional support from the business community, including contributions of personnel hours or financial backing, and encouraging companies to consider the international school in their recruitment contracts for expat employees.
This initiative is a promising development for Leeuwarden, poised to significantly enhance the region’s educational landscape and economic vitality.
